In brief: Djerbahood is an open air art gallery in a small town on Djerba Island. Now after eight years artists still come here to paint the walls of the town.
Just enjoy, as we did, the street art of Djerbahood. It’s an open air wander through a small town near Houmt Souk, the capital of Djerba Island, a few kilometers of the coast of SE Tunisia. (For more of the treats on the island, click here for our other Djerba post.)
Eight years ago 250 artists came to this array of old streets and non-descript buildings to paint the town red, yellow and every other color. Their street art project still beckons more artists every year.
A fantastical tree grows in Djerbahood.
What is the building and what is the painting, one ponders, on this image of a traditional cart for a junk collector? Among the best of the works are those which interact with the structures on which they were painted.
The grillwork of the building’s circles harmonizes with the overall painted image, and echoes the swallows liberated from her hair. Swallows are plentiful on the island.

What seems at first a bit creepy looks more like a social and charitable outreach after some time. Notice the open window on the left with the figures versus the painted grillwork of the window on the right.
These colorful musicians and herders traditionally accompanied a marriage procession for a new couple on Djerba Island. Many of the works of Djerbahood allude to local culture.
A traditional cart for transport of people and produce is turned fanciful by one artist.
