In brief: A local pro tennis tournament proved especially fun as an antidote to all the covid limitations.
We returned to Lisbon just in time to attend eight hours of a professional tennis tournament on a lovely day (but chilly night). The site was the clay courts at Estoril, a beach community west of Lisbon. We have attended pro tennis at several of the Majors, but we liked the easy-going, fun atmosphere where the action was very close. And it was, we realized, the most boisterous and busy event we had attended in nearly two years – due to pandemic limitations. Yes, it felt good!
Here we are basking in the sun on a comfortable afternoon. We were photo-bombed by the top-ten player Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Auger-Aliassime on his own, going all out for the volley – and eventually winning the match. The seats stayed mostly full except for the VIP ticket purchasers across the way, who preferred to remain in the enclosed VIP restaurant enjoying food and drink instead of the chill winds later in the day.
Tennis great Marin Cilic didn’t do so well against an up-and-coming Argentine player Sebastien Baez, but it was a thrill to see him play again.
