Bulgaria: We began in the historical and engaging town of Sofia, from which we visited several nearby locations of interest, before heading east to the Black Sea coast. Then we worked our way north and west to see natural and historical sites, as well as small town Bulgaria:
Sofia
Sofia area – Boyana church (UNESCO), Rila Monastery, Rila Mountains, Dragoman marsh, Vitosha Mt.
Plovdiv & Koprivshtitsa
Black Sea coast (Sozopol, Nessebar)
Srebarna nature reserve & Dunav (Danube) river
Ivanovo cave churches
Sveshtari and Kazanlak (Thracian tombs, UNESCO)
Veliko Tarnovo
North Macedonia: Again we started in the capital city of Skopje, with its ambitious transformation of the city in a grand imperial style, then traveled south to visit Mavrovo National Park and the old capital of the Bulgarian empire, Ohrid. At the time, the country’s name had not yet added the “North” designation, the result of a political agreement with other EU countries.
Skopje
Matka Canyon
Mavrovo National Park
Ohrid and Lake Ohrid
