After four years in Lisbon, partly waiting out the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, and various extended visits to Africa, we were ready to pick up and move for a while to a new region, the Caucasus, visiting here and neighboring Armenia and Georgia, which was our “base camp” for our six months in the region.
This is the only Muslim-majority country in the Caucasus, with about 10 million people. Our base camp was the exciting capital of Baku on the Caspian Sea. From there we made several journeys north and south.
Our itinerary included:
The Old Town and newer outlying districts of Baku
Candy Cane Mountains near Baku
Quba and Xinaliq (Khinaliq) – in the mountainous north
Atesgah, the Zoroastrian and Hindi fire temple near Baku
Qobustan, Lankaran, Lerik, and the colorful Hyrkan National Forest – to the south
Shamakhi and Qabala, Sheki and Kish – in the north
